What is RADIUS?
The RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service) protocol has been
traditionally used to authenticate and provision dial up clients. Additionally
it performs
accounting services for the same clients. RADIUS services fall under
the category of AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting).
This protocol is the de facto industry standard for these services.
Many modern applications use
the accounting function for Mobil-IP and VOIP (Voice over IP).
Software
can use the RADIUS protocol to authenticate, provision, and provide
accounting services for software applications.
What is a RADIUS Server?
A RADIUS server provides a single point authentication and accounting services
for dialup systems, wireless LANs, and applications.
It's the standard method of integrating a diverse collection
of authentication methods into one server. It does this by providing
a highly standardized way for any RADIUS client in any device or application
to use
diverse back end authentication systems in a secure manner.
A RADIUS server provides a common front end to any number of back end services
(LDAP, directory services, databases, flat files) that provide a store
of names, passwords, policy and provisioning services.
Most RADIUS servers on the market are turn key solutions. The AXL RADIUS
server is offered is to you who find turn key solutions insufficient
or inefficient and wish to design their own back end systems. The AXL
RADIUS server also embeds well in other applications.
